چکیده
In this paper we present a high order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme for solving a multi-class extension of the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model. We first review the multi-class LWR model and present some of its analytical properties. We then present the WENO schemes, which were originally designed for computational fluid dynamics problems and for solving hyperbolic conservation laws in general, and demonstrate how to apply these to the present model. We found through numerical experiments that the WENO method is vastly more efficient than the low order Lax-Friedrichs scheme, yet both methods converge to the same solution of the physical model. It is especially interesting to observe the small staircases in the solution which are completely missed out, because of the numerical viscosity, if a lower order method is used without a sufficiently refined mesh. To demonstrate the applicability of this new, efficient numerical tool, we study the multi-class model under different parameter regimes and traffic stream models. We consider also the convergence of the multi-class LWR model when the number of classes goes to infinity. We

A weighted essentially non-oscillatory numerical scheme for a multi-class traffic flow model on an inhomogeneous highway
As a new attempt to solve hyperbolic conservation laws with spatially varying fluxes, the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) method is applied to solve a multi-class traffic flow model for an inhomogeneous highway. The numerical scheme is based upon a modified equivalent system that is written in a “standard” hyperbolic conservation form. Numerical examples, which include the difficult...
متن کاملThe comparison of two high-order semi-discrete central schemes for solving hyperbolic conservation laws
This work presents two high-order, semi-discrete, central-upwind schemes for computing approximate solutions of 1D systems of conservation laws. We propose a central weighted essentially non-oscillatory (CWENO) reconstruction, also we apply a fourth-order reconstruction proposed by Peer et al., and afterwards, we combine these reconstructions with a semi-discrete central-upwind numerical flux ...

A new class of compact-reconstruction weighted essentially non-oscillatory (CRWENO) schemes were introduced (Ghosh and Baeder in SIAM J Sci Comput 34(3): A1678–A1706, 2012) with high spectral resolution and essentially non-oscillatory behavior across discontinuities. The CRWENO schemes use solution-dependent weights to combine lower-order compact interpolation schemes and yield a high-order com...
متن کاملAdaptive multiresolution WENO schemes for multi-species kinematic flow models
Multi-species kinematic flow models lead to strongly coupled, nonlinear systems of first-order, spatially one-dimensional conservation laws. The number of unknowns (the concentrations of the species) may be arbitrarily high. Models of this class include a multi-species generalization of the Lighthill–Whitham–Richards traffic model and a model for the sedimentation of polydisperse suspensions. T...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation on Compressible Flow Characteristics in Axial Compressors Using a Multi Block Finite Volume Scheme
An unsteady two-dimensional numerical investigation was performed on the viscous flow passing through a multi-blade cascade. A Cartesian finite-volume approach was employed and it was linked to Van-Leer's and Roe's flux splitting schemes to evaluate inviscid flux terms. To prevent the oscillatory behavior of numerical results and to increase the accuracy, Monotonic Upstream Scheme for Conservat...
